Growing a Forest at Peacedale Preserve: Chester County’s Newest Green Milestone

In May 2025, Chester County’s Peacedale Preserve reached an exciting milestone - more than 11,000 native trees and shrubs were planted across 36 acres of protected land. This large-scale restoration effort, led by conservation nonprofit Natural Lands, is more than just planting for beauty - it’s a strategic investment in clean water, healthy wildlife habitats, and a resilient local ecosystem.

Why Peacedale Matters

Peacedale Preserve, located in Landenberg, is a 222-acre expanse of rolling fields, woodlands, and waterways. This year’s planting targeted stream corridors and open fields, adding species carefully chosen to thrive in our region and improve water quality by stabilizing banks and filtering runoff before it reaches nearby creeks.

Native Species with a Purpose

The new seedlings include a mix of sycamores, red maples, serviceberries, blackgums, and flowering dogwoods - each offering ecological benefits:

  • Improved water filtration along streams and wetlands
  • Wildlife support, from migratory birds to pollinators
  • Climate resilience, with species adapted to local conditions

A Community Effort

While the planting was organized by professionals, its impact will be felt by the entire community. Local volunteers, conservation staff, and land stewards joined forces to get thousands of seedlings in the ground in just a matter of weeks. Their work ensures that these young trees have the best start possible - protected by tree shelters and maintenance plans for the critical early years.

The Bigger Picture

Large-scale projects like Peacedale Preserve are part of a growing movement to restore native forests throughout Chester County. By increasing tree cover, we:

  1. Protect local drinking water sources
  2. Reduce flooding and erosion
  3. Provide food and shelter for native wildlife
  4. Keep our communities cooler in summer heat

Looking Ahead

As these trees take root, Peacedale will transform - offering shaded walking trails, vibrant seasonal color, and healthier habitats. Projects like this remind us that the benefits of tree planting stretch far beyond the initial day’s work - they ripple through our environment for generations.
